Message from the Director
The Brooklyn Schools are committed to providing a free and appropriate public education for all students with disabilities. The mission of the Special Services Department is to ensure that students with disabilities receive quality instruction that is tailored to meet individual needs, and that each student will have the opportunity to achieve to a high standard.
The Department of Special Services provides programming for students ages three to twenty-one based on each student's individual goals and objectives outlined by the Individualized Education Plan. Brooklyn strives to educate each child in the least restrictive environment. Programs for special education students are, therefore, designed to encourage participation in the regular school program whenever possible.
When recommended by the Planning and Placement Team, special education instruction and related services are provided to all identified Brooklyn students, at all grade levels, by certified and/or licensed staff members. Personnel includes the Director of Special Education, special education teachers, speech and language pathologists, an occupational therapist, a school psychologist, a physical therapist, social workers, paraprofessionals and support staff.
Parents are valued partners in the Planning and Placement Team process. They are encouraged to attend all meetings and participate fully in the development of Individualized Education Plans, which will help students achieve their personal best.
